The impeller is the rotating component of the slurry pump, it transfers the centrifugal force to the slurry. Usually made of High-chrome spheroidal cast iron that is very abrasion resistant. The impeller could be closed, semi-open, open or recessed.

Usually, slurry pump impellers have a plain or a francis type vane,the plain vane has a leading edge square to the back shroud, whereas the Francis vane has a leading edge projecting into the impeller eye.

Slurry Pump Impellers are generally closed because of higher efficiencies and are less prone to wear in the front liner region. Open impellers are more common in smaller pumps or where particle blockage may be a problem or where the shear provided by an open impeller is an aid to pumping froth.

A clear liquid impeller usually has five to nine vanes, most slurry pump impellers have two to five. Applications requiring large particle passing often employ pumps with two or three vanes. Slurry pumps use short blocky vanes in contrast to the thin long-length, long-wrap vanes found on high efficiency pumps for clear liquids.
